Whooping cough isn’t high on most people’s list of worries. But infectious diseases like whooping cough, measles and mumps were a top concern in the not-so-distant past. What changed? The introduction of immunizations — these helpful shots have almost eliminated many serious diseases in today’s world. How do vaccines work? When a person is vaccinated, they receive an injection of dead or weakened virus or bacteria microbes. When the microbes enter the body, they stimulate the immune system. The immune system then builds antibodies that “remember” the virus or bacteria. If the real disease ever enters the body, the “memories” make it much easier to fight it off. Recently, some preventable diseases are making a comeback. These diseases wouldn’t spread as quickly or be as serious if people were immunized against them. That’s why it’s important to make sure that you and your family are protected with the right vaccinations. For the UHC Immunization Tip Sheet, click here or the UHC Calendar, click here
